Famous Football Players Who’ve Been Caught Smoking

The biggest football stars have been caught taking up a cigarette. Let us find out who they are.

1. Johan Cruyff


The legendary Johan Cruyff who played for Barcelona and Ajax, smoked 20 cigarettes daily when he was manager of Barca. In 1991, Johan Cruyff had double heart bypass surgery after the stress together with smoking caught up him. Finally he gave up smoking by replacing cigarettes with Chupa Chups lollipops.

2. Ashley Cole


Ashley Cole smokes heavily during his annual summer holiday in Los Angeles. Though his friends told him it is no good, he continues to smoke. He smokes now and smoked before famous Jose Mourinho became his boss. Mourinho is known to require discipline and best standards from his players. Thus the reaction of Mourinho will be negative. Remember 2012 when in April he dropped full back Fabio Coentrao for one game after he was caught smoking cigarette outside a restaurant on his birthday. Coentrao commented the incident as “an occasional thing”.

3. Zinedine Zidane


Before World Cup 2006 semi-final with Portugal, Zidane was caught lighting up a cigarette. This action contradicts the 2002 anti-smoking campaign that Zidane had supported.

4. Socrates


During his playng career, this famous Brazilian player smoked two packs of cigarettes a day.

5. Mario Balotelli


Mario Balotelli who plays for AC Milan was caught several times smoking cigarettes. Once it was when he played for Manchester City. His boss, Roberto Mancini, told him to quit smoking or to leave Manchester City. So Balotelli left Manchester City. This year being a AC Milan player, he was caught smoking in a train’s toilets.

6. Robert Prosinecki


The Croatian footballer who played for Barcelona, Read Madrid and Portsmouth smokes 40 cigarettes a day!

7. Fabien Barthez


Famous goalkeeper who won the World Cup 1998 in France loves to smoke.

8. Wayne Rooney


The player of Manchester United was caught in August 2010 on a night out in Manchester city center. Besides this, in May 2011 he was caught smoking in the pool during his honeymoon.

9. Stanley Matthews


In 1952 the football player was advertising Craven cigarettes. The ads says Craven A cigarettes are “kind to your throat” and “Stan takes his training very seriously and soon discovered the cigarette which suited him best”.

10. Dimitar Berbatov


When the Bulgarian player was caught smoking a cigarette, he said to a paper he does not. He said he takes a cigarette in his mouth just to pretend he smoks to look cool.
