Levie Russell McClain aged 102 is a smoker. He started to smoke cigarettes at 16 when he went to work in a cotton factory. Recently he celebrated his 102 birthday and most of his life he lived in Madison County. His son, Bill McClain, says that though his dad smokes, he is never sick.
McClain with his family lives in a house which has 150 years old. June McClain, his daughter, lives in Jackson County and she said that the house was bought in 1950s by her grandmother, Reesie Mercer McClain.
Madison County Senior Center provides a daily meal for Levie Russell McClain who still prepares snacks for himself. Kelsey Tyner, the director of the Center, says it is great to see how a 102-year-old man manages to do it. Tyner made acquaintance with him while learning the home meal delivery routes.
Two times McClain was married and both ex-wives are still living. He divirced wuth his first wife in 1947, they have two children — Barbara and Bill. Today she is 96 and enjoys a good health.
The mother of Jane is 79 and also enjoys a good health. She lives in Jackson County and though they are not together with her ex-husband, they still ask about each other.
McClain parents enjoyed a long life — his father, Walter Martin McClain, died several days before his 91st birthday and his mother died at age of 86, However, McClain has problems with hearing, so the discussion may be quite difficult with him. His children say the problems began only few years ago.
At his age, McClain has strong hands and a firm handshake. Yeah, he worked at cotton mills all his life and always was strong. McClain said that the work was not steady and he along with his friends could go outside and smoke. But when there was work fir them, they worked 10 – 12 hours, and the work was hot and dirty.
