Smokers at Old Orchard Beach will now be asked to put out their cigarettes before stepping foot on the sand.

After a two-year struggle, a group of four teenage girls, who formed the OOB Youth Tobacco Action Group, convinced the city council to vote unanimously in favor of a tobacco-free resolution. Unlike an ordinance, a resolution does not enforce the tobacco ban. Even so, ‘no smoking’ signs will be placed throughout town to help people become aware of the policy.

“Well enforcement would be great, but the resolution…it’s a good option and we’re going to be pushing in the future for an ordinance like our surrounding towns have done,” Hattie Simon, Youth Tobacco Action Group, said.

The Youth Action Group will also help educate people in Old Orchard Beach on the health problems tobacco products and smoke exposure can cause.
